By the end of the century, most modern buildings will have a coating applied to the exterior.
A few will have it applied on the inside as well.
But the coatings that are most likely to be worn by the most demanding architectural decorators and coatings for the most common types of buildings, such as the glass, metal and plastic coatings used in many commercial and residential buildings, will likely be the ones you want to avoid.
Here are 10 tips to keep in mind.
Avoid coatings made from lead paint, which can be toxic to humans.
Lead paint is a known carcinogen, and its presence in the environment is known to increase the risk of cancer.
It is also toxic to the kidneys, lungs and bones.
While lead is generally not a health hazard in general, the paint on the outside of buildings can make the inside of a building more vulnerable to exposure to lead, according to the American Chemical Society.
The EPA recommends that the coating on the exterior of buildings be applied using paint containing at least 0.3 percent lead, which has a pH value of 7.5 or less.
Never use coatings in combination.
It may be the right combination to protect your work, but it can also be detrimental to the environment.
It’s not uncommon for a coating to become brittle and scratch easily.
If you use a coat that is brittle or scratchy, it will not last and may degrade over time.
If the coat is a thick, water-resistant coating that will not hold up under heavy cleaning or maintenance, it may cause more damage to your work than if you used a thin, water resistant coating.
Avoid mixing coatings together.
Mixing coatings will add unnecessary complexity to the job.
A thin coat can take up a lot of space and create an uneven surface.
Mixed coatings create more problems.
The thinner coat will make the paint thinner and make it less likely to stick to the interior of the building.
Mix the coat with a thin layer of paint, such a clear paint or clear paint-based coatings.
Mix one coat of paint with a coat of coatings with different coatings to give your coatings the consistency of a thin coat.
Don’t use paint that is sold as a coat.
The coatings on the surface of most buildings are actually paint that has been added by someone using paint that comes in a clear, paint-free version.
If a coat is not clear, it can’t be used as a coating.
Avoid adding coatings by hand.
Paint can be applied to buildings by hand, but that can cause problems for workers.
If there are many coats of paint on a building, a paint can be thrown on and then washed off.
If paint is applied to surfaces that aren’t intended for the use of workers, it’s possible that the paint will damage the building and cause damage to the workers or other workers, according the National Association of Home Builders.
If workers are exposed to paint that they shouldn’t be exposed to, they may develop skin allergies or asthma, or even get skin cancer, according National Council for Home Health.
Avoid applying coats of coaters on concrete.
Concrete surfaces are usually not designed for coating, so it’s often easier to apply paint by hand to concrete surfaces.
When it comes to applying coatings over concrete, it is important to avoid spraying or pouring water over the concrete, which will add to the surface’s acidity and make the surface brittle and uneven.
To avoid paint, you can use a mixture of water and water-soluble paint to apply a coat to concrete.
A simple, waterless paint-type spray like the ones used to seal paint can also work well.
Use a brush or water-proofing sprayer.
While it’s tempting to use a brush to apply coatings or a sprayer to coat concrete, that can add unnecessary work to the task.
Instead, you may want to use your fingers, a spray bottle or an inexpensive water-based product like the one shown in the picture below.
The product works by spraying the paint into the concrete.
Once the paint is sprayed into the ground, the product is washed off, leaving a clear coat that’s easier to work with.
If possible, avoid using a paint-spraying sprayer, as that product may be a little on the messy side.

Avoid using paint to cover the inside or outside of a structure.
